Bāula Saṅgīta
Song 4
(1)
`bāula bāula’ balche sabe, hacche bāula kona janā
dāḍi-cūḍā dekhiye (o bhāi) karche jīvake vañcanā
Everyone says, “Bāula, Bāula,” but who has become a Bāula? By displaying a beard and topknot (O brothers), you are simply cheating people.
(2)
deha-tattva—jaḍer tattva,
tā’te ki chāḍāy māyār gartta,
cidānanda paramārtha, jānate ta tāy pārbe nā
Your concept of deha-tattva is actually jaḍa-tattva.* With this, how will you leave the womb of Māyā? The supreme goal is eternal bliss (cidānanda) and unless you understand this, you will not attain it.
*Deha-tattva is the Bāula philosophy that proposes that the physical body is actually divine.
(3)
yadi bāula cāo re ha’te, tabe cala dharma-pathe,
yoṣit-saṅga sarva-mate chāḍa re maner
Oh, if you want to become a Bāula, then proceed on the path of dharma. Oh, in every way you must abandon the mind’s desires for the association of women.
(4)
veśa-bhūṣā-raṅga jata, chāḍi’ nāme hao re rata,
nitāi-cāṅder anugata, hao chāḍi’ sab dur–vāsanā
Oh, stop adorning yourself with impressive clothes and ornaments, and become attached to the chanting of the Holy Name. Become a follower of Nitāi Cāṅda and renounce all evil desires.
(5)
mukhe `hare kṛṣṇa’ bala, chāḍa re bhāi kathār chala,
nāma vinā ta’ su-sambala, cāṅda bāula āra dekhe nā
Oh brothers! With your mouths, chant, “Hare Kṛṣṇa” and give up frivolous speech. Without the Holy Name, Cāṅda Bāula sees no other true necessity.
