Overview

‘Vedānta Śāstra’ was first published in Sajjana Toṣaṇī, Vol. 1 issue 1 in 1881. This was the first ever article written for Sajjana Toṣaṇī by Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura. In this brief editorial, the Ṭhākura explains how he plans to publish the Govinda Bhāṣya of Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa, but first wishes to extend the subscriber base of the magazine first.

(translated by Swami B.V. Giri)

In the first issue, an introduction to the Vedānta Śāstra has been written. We will gradually publish the Vedanta-tra, its commentaries and translations in this magazine. The Śmad Govinda-bhāṣya commentary on the Vedānta-sūtra will be published in this magazine. The world renowned Ś Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa Paṇḍita Bābājī Mahodaya is the author of this commentary. At some point, his biography will also be published in this magazine.

We would start publishing the Vedānta in this issue, but due to the number of recent subscribers, only a small number of copies are being printed. If any part of the Vedānta is printed in small numbers, then that part may not be available later for those who are interested. Therefore, the appeal to the general public is that they should subscribe before the next issue is published, and we will print as many copies that are necessary. The price of this magazine is small, that is, it will not cost more than 1 Anna per year. Considering that valuable books such as the Vedānta etc. can be obtained at such a low price, the sajjanas (gentle devotees) should immediately become subscribers. We hope to get the help of all sajjanas.
