Śrī Caitanya Śikṣāmṛta

by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura

translated by Swami Bhaktivijñāna Giri

Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura composed Śrī Śrī Caitanya-Śikṣāmṛta — “The Nectar of the Teachings of Śrī Caitanya” — in 1886, presenting what many regard as his most comprehensive philosophical exposition of Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava siddhānta. Written in Bengali at the height of his theological maturity, the work systematically unfolds the complete teaching of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, beginning with a rigorous analysis of the three fundamental categories of existence — Īśvara, cetana, and jaḍa (God, the conscious soul, and inert matter) — and proceeding through the nature of māyā, the path of sādhana-bhakti, and the ultimate perfection of prema. The text is organised into a series of vṛṣṭis (showers) and dhārās (streams), its very structure evoking the image of nectarean rain descending from the cloud of Caitanya’s mercy.

What distinguishes Caitanya-Śikṣāmṛta within Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura’s extensive literary output is its breadth of philosophical engagement. Writing for an educated 19th-century Bengali readership, he addresses not only the orthodox schools of Indian philosophy — Advaita Vedānta, Sāṅkhya, Nyāya — but also positions Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavism in dialogue with the Western thought and rationalism of his era. His argument throughout is that all incomplete, erroneous, or mutually contradictory philosophical conclusions find their ultimate resolution in Kṛṣṇa-bhakti.

In translating Śrī Caitanya Śikṣāmṛta we have primarily used the version which was published in Sajjana Toṣaṇī, Vol.16 in 1903. All the verses cited as footnotes were added by Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura himself.
