Śrī Godruma Kalpāṭavī

by Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura

Śrī Godruma Kalpāṭavī (The Desire-tree Grove of Godruma) is a collection of Bengali articles written by Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura in 1891, describing his Nāma Haṭṭa — the “marketplace of the Holy Name” — a widespread congregational preaching movement inspired by the example of Lord Nityānanda. Using the extended metaphor of a transcendental marketplace, Bhaktivinoda outlines its structure and personnel — from the chief trader, Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu, down to the travelling salesmen, storekeepers, and the humble sweeper, a role Bhaktivinoda reserved for himself — explaining that the currency of this market is faith and devotion, by which anyone, regardless of caste or background, may purchase the holy name. During his lifetime Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura established over five hundred Nāma Haṭṭa groups throughout Bengal, and the Godruma Kalpāṭavī served as the movement’s newsletter, reporting on preaching activities, festivals, and the progress of devotees across Eastern India.
